I grew up in Thornhill, Dumfriesshire, where I
went to school at Wallace Hall Primary and Wallace Hall Academy. During my time at Primary school, I started
lessons on the piano and then the clarinet (after not being able to learn the
saxophone at Primary!?). When I moved up to Secondary school, I
immediately started lessons on the alto saxophone, gaining up to ABRSM Grade
8, along with Grade 8 on piano and Grade 5 on clarinet. While at
Wallace Hall Academy, I joined the Dumfries Youth Jazz Group, where I got my
first taste of jazz and Big Band music. While a member, I got to work
with major jazz musicians including Tommy Smith, Laura McDonald, Richard
Michael, Julian Joseph, Joe Temperley, Mario Caribe and Sebastien de Krom. Through playing with the DYJG, I auditioned
for and joined the National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Scotland and the Tommy
Smith Youth Jazz Orchestra. I also got lessons from Paul Towndrow for 2
and half years. I am now studying the BA Applied Music course
at Strathclyde University, where I now get taught by Konrad Wiszniewski and
have worked with other jazz musicians including Stephen Duffy and Bobby Wishart.
In my first year, I also had the great privilege of playing as part of
a support band to the late Humphrey Lyttelton at the Cinnamon Club in
Manchester. I am also part of the horn section to the
upcoming Glasgow band, The Dirty Demographic. I also play in a funk
band, Washington Street. Both bands are now beginning to make names for
themselves, performing mainly around Glasgow but also in Edinburgh. |
