John
Parkes began learning to play the trumpet when he was 11. An early hero was
Eddie Calvert, `The Man with the Golden Trumpet', who had a number of hit
parade successes such as `Cherry Pink And Apple Blossom White' in 1955. JohnÕs first
big band gig was as a 16 year old on Saturday evenings at the Willenhall
Palais near Birmingham. Around
that time he discovered Harry James and Maynard Ferguson. This led to a
lifelong passion for jazz and big bands. In addition to Harry and Maynard,
his favourite trumpet players include Chet Baker, Clifford Brown, Lee Morgan
and Miles Davis. A recent discovery is Eric Miyashiro. Along
with John Davies, SUBB's director, John Parkes helped found SUBB in 1978. As
well as playing trumpet in the band, he is the secretary, treasurer and
librarian. John works
in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Strathclyde. |
